KKC Awards

There are a good number of awards associated with the Klamath Kinetic Challenge. Most re-occur year after year, again and again and again. Some come and go, off and on. Then a few each year seem to pop up from no-where but make perfect sense at the time. It is highly likely that some competitor will accomplish some feet, or surmount some obstacle worthy of special note. Such is Kinetics.

The major annual awards, at least most of them, are listed below. This to whet the appetite of potential competitors and draw them to Klamath.

PEL Status

Sculptures traversing the course within all time limits and without being pushed or pulled. i.e. Meeting all PEL Rules. A high award given to all sculptures meeting this criteria, sought after by all competitors. The number of PEL awards is only limited by fate.

EAGLE (Grand Champion)

The overall winner. This award is given to the highest combined score in speed, engineering and art. Each of these three areas will be equally weighted in combined score for this very prestigious award.

GIZMO MANIA (Engineering)

Ingenious conquering of course obstacles through sculpture design and use of ingenuity in any facet of sculpture design that functions in any truly unique and glorious manner.

VAN GO GO (Art)

Sculptures judged on execution of artistic form and originality.

ROAD RUNNER (Fastest)

The vehicle completing the course in the fastest time. (See scoring)

OWL (local)

Best local entry. Same criteria as the Grand Champion but must originate from the Klamath Basin.

DANCING GREBE (Biggest Splash)

Biggest splash on water entry.

STUCK DUCK (Mediocre)

Mediocre, vehicle coming in in the middle of the pack.

PELICAN BRIEF

First Sculpture to experience a breakdown after the starting gun. Well, really after the start which will be a whistle, horn, loud shout, waving flag or other not easily missed indicator. We'd like to have a starting gun but the ophisials say even a starters gun in the hands of our starter would be dangerous.

SECOND TO LAST

Sculpture coming in second to last, duh. This is a highly coveted award sometimes referred to, during the after race party, as "at least I wasn't last" award.

MOST LIKELY

Sculpture which, in the final decision of the Safety Coalition, proves to have the biggest potential of incurring the likelihood of a probable incident. The team having the greatest number of notable issues, whether an incident occurs or not. Decisions on this award are made before the start of the race.

Notes:

To keep a few competitors from taking home a good portion of the hardware, we forbid this. A sculpture winning a high award will forgo lesser awards. We deem high awards to be ranked 1) Eagle, 2) Gizmo Mania, 3) Van Go Go, 4) Road Runner.

Other awards are up for grabs. We would expect the Most Likely to have a good shot at winning this and the Pelican Brief award. Attaining the Eagle award won't preclude a kontraption from wowing the spectators with a wild splash and the Dancing Brebe award. But only one top four award please.
