KKSR 2005 Wrap Up

The weather was cooler and cloudier than expected, but that's June. Rain threatened but held off but for a few sprinkles. Conditions could have been nicer but also could have been much worse.

Art, Engineering and Pageantry Judging, as well as Safety Inspections, were undertaken after the Kinetic Fun Run started around 8:30. Judging extended throughout the race but here Judges had a chance to grill competitors.

Here Paul Vibrans (Das Boat) explains his creation to the confused engineering judges.

After starting on time in Veterans Park a loop through downtown was taken showing off the eleven vehicles involved. The trials started soon after with the climb up KILLER KAGO Hill. A few vehicles had problems but most survived to traverse the "Gravel Boulevard" above link river to Moore Park. The riders enjoyed the quiet paved roads and scenery of the upper loop of Moore Park before stopping for lunch.

The mud and sand pits followed lunch. The mud pit was deceptively difficult. It appeared solid with only a few muddy areas. However, the unevenness of the pit was the undoing of several sculptures. The Kinetic Choo Choo put forth a heroic effort to overcome the pit delighting the crowds. Crowds picked up with a hundred or so spectators present. The sand pit was compacted by the rains of previous days so wasn't too difficult. Most, but not all, sculptures transited this obstacle.

Leaving Moore Park sculptures traveled down the Link River trail back to Veterans Park. This gravel section caused few problems but was quite scenic.

From Veterans Park a short loop on Lake Ewauna was made more difficult by winds. Spectators from Moore Park were using their cell phones to call others encouraging them to come see the spectacle, thus crowds were much larger for the water event. Several hundred spectators watched the kinetic sculptures perform many dizzying circles in front of the cheering fans. Time Flies even made a water entry from the dock!

Music by the Joan Daley Band & Soul'd Out and a BBQ put on by the Kiwanis followed the race. Racers and spectators relived the day far into the evening. Awards were presented by the Kinetic Deva (Supreme Organizer) to the delight of everyone.

Accolades were given to Kinetic Deva (Denise Currin) for bringing the KKSR into being by force of will alone. Without her efforts the First Annual KKSR would have been lost forever.

If you participated you know how well it went, so tell everyone and get them out for the Second Annual KKSR. If you missed the First you'll just have to wait for the 2006 race.

FOR THE FUN !
